I think one of the reasons

I think one of the reasons to suspend games for these holidays is that people go on trips and are aften found without resources to have a freeciv client to connect to a game. I came accross this idea about using vncserver on a machine that has a freeciv client and then from any machine that has a java capable browser, I could connect to that server and it would supply me the vnc applet and then connect to the freeciv client (tightvnc). That would allow me to get to any of my friends' computers or internet cafe and play my turn. Maybe I could also connect by using some of these new smart cells/pdas popping up all around.

Would it be possible or easy for longturn.org to setup a vncserver like that?

I think there would be numerous advantages of doing so, here is a few;
- Ability for every player to play his turn from anywhere at anythime.
- Ability to provide special clients for special games without the need to setup clients for every possible architecture.
- Attract to the game some people that do not want or can download and install another program from the Net.

But it would be neccesary to store quite memory-expensive clients connected all the time, X libraries loaded all the time , etc.... all 30x

And not very secure IMHO.

Indeed the freeciv client

Indeed the freeciv client seem to be taking a lot of room sometimes. The tightvnc server does not look like having a heavy footprint on the machine. The security seems to be a real issue but I was thinking more like using an old machine that is already collecting dust and to not connect to any internal network. It could be setup to only allow like 3 connections to start with and maybe put these connections on a timer (like 30 minutes). That will only accomodate the 'vacationers' as I am sure most people would prefer to use their own 'home setup' to play their turn. Of course, the Xwindow startup would have to be tailored to start only the civclient and nothing else. Also, it seems that multiple vnc clients can connect to the same vncserver so we would need to take care of that.

Freeciv Webclient

There is actually a working (beta) webclient now, with servers (I don't think anyone actually uses them though). Here: http://www.freeciv.net/
Sources: http://code.google.com/p/freec...

Maybe someone can talk to Andreas to see if somehow the longturn servers could be accessed from there...

I don't think the webclient is feature-complete, but I did a few moves in a single player game and it could work to move your worker and check if you've been invaded, etc...

Hmm, nice ... problem is that site design make feeling like it's quite old. Has anybody tried it?

Just tried it. Aside from

Just tried it. Aside from the fact that I could not change the tileset to my favorite trident, I think it has some good potential. It seems heavy on Firefox and response time was a bit slow. There are a few options missing but the images where nice and the user interface was friendly. For now, it seems to only connect to it's own servers but I am sure that can be arrange. I still prefer the simplicity of connecting to a vncserver.

That is a great project,

That is a great project, thank you for the informations.

Longturn on the webclient

Sure, I can setup some servers for longturn games on the Freeciv.net web client.
Which server settings do you use for longturn games? Do you have any patches applied to the server?
Must server auth. be enabled? Get in touch at andrearo AT pvv.ntnu.no.

I think there is misunderstanding here - we don't need to run civserver on your side - we have own. What would be nice is access to OUR server using your webclient.

Anyway, I will look into code of webclient (I heard it's published) and will see if I can run it on my server. If I won't be able - I will ask you for help.

That seems to be a lot more

That seems to be a lot more work (including software version updates) than setting up a vncserver. Think about it during Christmas idling time... By the way Merry Christmas to you and everybody that care for this holiday!!

Maybe more work, but it's better. Setting vncserver doesn't look like good solution.

Merry Christmas too.

Hi Maho/Edrim.

Can the 3 days please be clarified? Can I suggest/presume the evening of 24th Dec until the evening of 27 December (European time)

Note - this is actually 4 days :-)

The 24th Dec evening I'm by the Christmas Eve table, so it's very unlike that I will disturb celebrating to hold the game :).

I will hold the game probably at 23 Dec (if not - at 24 Dec for sure) (at some hour) and I will release it not earlier than 3 days after that.

I think I cannot be more strict, because I cannot estimate how much will I be devoted to celebrarting :).

holiday

It'd nice if we could extend the holiday break until January 2nd. Should I open a vote for this?

happy new year !

Yes it would be great to have the whole week free. I think its too late for a vote to start now though. Maybe Maho will just be having too much fun at home to restart the servers.

In such case we will wait to

Beginning of Spring

It's quite cold here, I have problems to write and play with cold fingers. Can we wait until the winter is over (2010-03-20) please?

We can still wait for

We can still wait for everyone press turn done.
But there are still few of us who not clicked it.

Of course. It's brilliant

Of course. It's brilliant idea. Your wish is an order.

But I think we should make 1 turn per 1 year so our sons will continue our work here.
It would be almost like real civilization.
