Marduk just (afaik) dropped info, he is not able to play. do we form 5 teams consisting of 6 people (and keep two previously made picks, to make it faster) , or do we add 6th captain in his place ( probably me for obvious reasons)? I suggest acclamation voting, another formal poll delays the game for at least 1 week. Anyone who feels like saying something better do it quickly - or we'll never start the game...
edit: I abstain, for obvious reasons, but I suggest everyone to be strongly declared - we do not need discussion, we need decision.

I vote for this solution. This is kind of experimental game so i rather like to have 5 teams and start earlier than making everythink from the beggining.

Marduk isn't the problem. The problem (at the moment) is turbo and durandal. They both seem to be missing. Marduk will be the 3rd problem (but he is "less" missing - he already said he will be away in July).
How about this suggestion? We have a 48 hr poll - cancel teams for this game. Start as is, remove all idlers first turn and continue as per normal...
Seeing there is a poll about stopping city trading that will reduce teleporting to some degree anyway.

I second a move for a poll to cancel teams. I'm not sure if I am comfortable being 'assigned' to a captain whose politics are in opposition to mine. If we keep these large teams, I think we should let them be at random. The potential for a powerhouse team to be randomly created does not bother me. I have confidence in my own civilization and that of my potential allies.

But, we proposed team game with blocked diplomacy as temporary countermeasure to city-and-unit-trading issue. Game when someone gets better allies is ok, game when someone gets their countries is not. We can't play anything close to fair without solving that problem first.

Well, remove all idlers who didn't expect the game to start this early, and you will then have an LT of 10 players or something. Well, fine by me, but I don't think that is a great solution either. :-)

I'm not against such solution, but first I'd like to see that info from Marduk ;).
Speeding up team choosing
A suggestion to speed this choosing process. I prefer to keep 6 captains but lowering to 5 is not so important.
1. Have 5 rounds of choosing, maximum 24 hours each.
2. Captains give a list (6 names) each 24 hours of the player they want. The top available player is chosen.
3. If no list is provided in time player is chosen randomly.
4. If a captain misses a turn the next player in the team becomes the captain.

He means, that there should be 24h long rounds, in which all captain must present 6 names. The order of precedense for each captain is known, so we take first captain's list and take number one. If second's captain number one is the same as previous choice, we pick his number two, if he wanted someone other, he gets whom he wanted. Too generalise : each captain presents a list of his preferred choices, ordered. If claims are shared, one of the captain ( the one that would choose later in current scheme) gets his second preference.
If someone fails to deliver 6 names every 24h, he gets random player :D
Good idea, but 24h is too short, time-zone issue of the starting of the counter.
As for Marduk, Elrik told me he mailed him that he is in China, with hardly any possibility to get online. He stated that he will not be able to play in next 4 weeks. I consider it reliable source - but if you want to get it forwarded to you, you have to wait at least 18h for Elrik to appear :/
edit: Elrik, forgive me, but I checked for the confirmation. I'll not forward anybody's mail without consent, but maho - I've seen the mail. Marduk tells he maybe confirms it personally on the site here. Does not state when, though :)

Ok, ok, I believe. I only wanted to be sure that it isn't some kind of misunderstanding, as when you announced that Elrik won't play ;).
About new rules - I think they are not good. It's something totally different if I have Haken in team, or if my enemy have him. In both cases I would choose totally different players.
I would be for such rules, if we stop them in first case of conflict. I mean, when some list has player A on the first position, but A is already assigned to different team.
But, I'm not captain ... so it's only my opinion ;)

I suggest that we either start the game with 30 teams of 1, or if we can get 6 captains, each captain should submit a ranked list with all 30 players who have signed up. Then someone would use the lists to pick the teams. He would just use the order we have now and give that captain the highest available player on the list.

I agree that at this speed we'll not start the game before 3 weeks.
I second the idea of having 6 captains selecting teams according to an efficient procedure. I propose the following efficient procedure:
First, all captains confirm that they are active and not idling. There is a two days deadline. If Marduk, turbo or whoever is said to be away does not confirm activeness within that period, the next player is choosen as a captain. This implies that the 7th, 8th, ... player on the captain voting list should confirm their activeness too by putting a message here.
On Sunday night, there should then be a final list of captains. Every captain should then submit a selection algorithm, which should be an efficiently human-executable procedure to select team members. You can just submit your ranking of all players, or you can say "if haken is not choosen, Then I choose Haken, Else if Haken is in my team, I choose according to the following ranking {....} Else I choose according to the following ranking {****}". This should be finished by Monday, and then someone can execute Maho's picking procedure using these selection algorithms to make a final team list by Tuesday next week. (Submitted algorithms that crash or take more than 2 minutes per pick to execute by a human will be considered to be random.)
Of course, if it turns out that only 10 players are active currently, one may decide to postpone the game until after the holydays, or even better to just start a game now and another one after the holydays.

Due to fact, that Marduk can't be captain (I hope that it's strict information), and Turbo doesn't respond, I remove Turbo and Marduk from list of captains. Vonzgred and Trlv goes in instead.
So, Elrik, I invalidate your choice (you can't have another team captain in your team :D), I also ask Vonzgred and Trlv to make their choices. Trlv first, next Vonzgred, next Elrik.

Maybe. It's matter of interpretation. But I think it's better if we just leave MrS choice as is.
Note, that it isn't selecting total restart, but only slight modification.

I can play along, but I do not consider it fair. It is like restarting a game in order to edit a savefile ( as is being done in changing server variables if game is already started), but the edit concerns only selected players.
Wait till Elrik sees it. I am sure we will be able to read something about premeditated selectiveness in modificating or something like this ( although, he prefers to use simplier words :) ).

Ok, so, MrS, I strongly appeal to your selfpreservation instinct. The fact is, 3rd/4th (in order) captain has first pick, no matter is the pick wrong or bad. I am sure, someone will not be happy about total outcome and brings it up next week, when we finish the choosing, no matter if it concerns Citral or not. The fact that something was not by the book is as good reason as any other to undermine the balance/correctness/whatever of resulting teams - lets get rid of that reason before it even begins to matter. Giving Trlv full list of possible picks is a must if we want to shorten the whole process eventually:)

trlv's selection algorithm
In order to choose a player for my team:
1) Select in order: janq, bluemoth, maho, :
2) Else,(i.e. if none of above available), if any of the list [pipo, durandal, vonzgred, turbo] would be confirmed available (playing and not captain) at the time of executing this algorithm then choose in the order of this list;
3) Else if bluemoth is not in the team, then select Citral ;
4) Else, if any of the list [elrik, durandal] would be confirmed available (playing and not captain) at the time of executing this algorithm, then choose in order of this list;
5) Else, select in order LordVan, sokrat, jajcus, makak, woj11, kevin555, kevapo, Citral, Crandel, , presencia, skeeto, totyvalle, glob stain, mr. Brown ;
6) Else, select among available players in (case insensitive) lexicographical order on login name (i.e. adam, bishop, canuck, detor, ...);

1. Restart the choosing.
2. Make Bluemoth the replacement captain. He was the next player on the captain's vote who hasn't been chosen yet. He will have the next two picks. (last of the first round and first of the second round).
3. Change the system to 5 teams of 6 and carry on the current vote.

I have 1 new idea:) After 2 rounds (Jajcus end 1rst and start 2nd) everyone will take persons he like the most, so maybe then every captain will write who he DOESN`T want (i hope at last 1 person for captain, or even noone) and we make a drawing:) Someone can make a simple code at pascal/C post it here so that everyone can take a look at it and then use it to make teams. After that we(captains) should have few days to contact whole team and we can start:) What do You think about that?

That is the quickest I think.
They can mail it to maho so that one captain doesnt have the advantage of seeing what other player's lists are.
Then you have the most chance of getting the players high on your list, and less chance of getting the players lower on your list.
Then, In case of collisions we have a list of captains which we sort on order of the number of votes they had, in ascending order. When two choices collide, the person high on the list (thus having the less votes, and thus less skill) gets the player, and he moves to the bottom of the list.
It's the most fair way to solve collisions by giving the first choice to the player with less skill.
